A special report by Peeled Apple entertainment reporter Molly Ringwald.
U2 singer, Bono, received the phone call that all artists dread last week when Microsoft's Bill Gates called to suggest that he and his wife, Melinda, could "maybe..you know..kinda...join the band."
Gates is believed to have urged Bono to consider the offer as a means of continuing the band's cancelled "Vertigo" World tour.
A spokesman for the singer described how Bill and Melinda sang a rendition of the U2 song "One" down the phone "Bono is extremely traumatised and is seriously considering the value of any future duets if this is the kind of attention they bring."
Over the years Gates has stalked many musicians. In 1998 he attempted to tour with Iggy and The Stooges, Echo and The Bunnymen and pretending he was Tom Verlaine, tried to reform Television. In 2003 Gates was ejected from the Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival when, with Steve Ballmer, he and Melinda pretended they were the John Butler Trio.
On the flip side of the coin Gates has filed several cease and desist orders against Mark Mothersbaugh and other members of the group Devo, whom Gates claims have been harassing him for almost ten years.
